Liposuction – St. Louis

Demonstrating her commitment to excellence, Dr. Michele Koo uses the latest advanced techniques including Smart Lipo, Laser Lipo, and Ultrasonic Liposuction on all areas of the body.

I will be very honest with you as to which procedure is most optimal for your body and skin type. I perform most of my liposuction procedures as an outpatient under general anesthesia, as I feel this is the safest, allowing me to achieve the best most aggressive results possible for you.

Regardless of the technique used, my experience and training ensure that liposuction is safe and extremely effective at removing stubborn pockets of fat, that do not respond to a proper diet and exercise regimen.

About the Liposuction Procedure

Liposuction, also known as Liposculpture, sculpts the affected areas of the body by removing stubborn fat deposits that may persist in the abdomen, waist, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, upper arms, chin, cheeks and neck. Liposuction permanently removes stubborn fat deposits, creating long-lasting results.

I will begin the liposuction procedure by making multiple small incisions to the affects areas, that have been previously mapped out. Once I have made the incision, I introduce a saline solution, lidocaine (local anesthetic) and a small amount of adrenaline to minimize bruising and bleeding. After I have introduced the solution, I will use one of two common liposuction techniques.

Suction-assisted lipectomy (SAL) uses a small narrow tube (cannula) that is inserted through a small incision. I will gently move the small tube back and forth to dislodge stubborn fat deposits and remove them.

Ultrasonic-assisted lipectomy is similar to suction-assisted lipectomy, but differs in that UAL uses ultrasonic energy to liquefy stubborn fat deposits before removing them. A cannula is also used in this method to remove the stubborn fat.

Liposuction Results

Results from the procedure are generally immediately visible following a liposuction procedure. The results improve over time as swelling and bruising subside. I will make sure that the scars that are caused by the small incisions made generally fade and are small and inconspicuous. Liposuction results in a smooth and contoured appearance and offers long-lasting results. While stubborn fat deposits will not return, assuming patients maintain a proper diet and exercise regimen, significant weight gain can cause these fat deposits to return.

Risk Associated with Liposuction

Risks are typically uncommon with the liposuction procedure; nevertheless, if they do occur, they may include the following:

  • Infection
  • Delays in healing
  • Fat clots or blood clots
  • Shock
  • Fluid accumulation
  • Burns
  • Perforation injury
  • Lidocaine toxicity
  • Unfavorable drug or anesthesia reactions
